This Fall, the Beach House welcomes its first Artist in Residence, the poet Majid Naficy, who will be working at the Beach House from November 23 – February 1. On November 23rd he will read from a selection of his poetry on the theme of "Santa Monica".

Majid Naficy fled Iran in 1983, a year and a half after the execution of his wife, Ezzat, in Tehran. He has been living in Venice Beach and Santa Monica since 1984. Majid Naficy has published two collections of poetry in English; Muddy Shoes (Beyond Baroque Books, 1999) and Father and Son (Red Hen Press 2003) as well as his doctoral dissertation Modernism and Ideology in Persian Literature (University Press of America 1997). He is the author of more than twenty books of poetry and essays in Persian. During his Annenberg Community Beach House residency, he will be working on a new collection of poetry.

About the Artist Residency: In honor of Marion Davies’ own artistry and her support of artists, and to further the work of the City of Santa Monica to promote the arts, the City is sponsoring one Resident Artist for the Fall and one Resident Artist for the Spring semesters at the Beach House. The Resident will share their creative efforts with the public at intervals throughout their tenure, so please check back with us to reserve your seats to future events. The Fall Residency focuses on the discipline of writing; future residencies will explore various disciplines including visual arts, choreography, and music composition, among others.
